Lumberjack — Complete Game Guide

Tips, strategies, weapon stats, and full walkthrough for all 4 episodes

Getting Started

Lumberjack is a free browser survival game that needs no download or installation — it runs entirely in your browser using HTML5 Canvas and Three.js. You play as a lumberjack whose wife has been kidnapped and taken to an ice cave deep in the mountains. Your journey spans four very different episodes, each with unique gameplay mechanics.

Before You Begin

Controls

🌲 Episode 1: The Forest

2D Top-Down Survival Difficulty: Medium

The Forest is the opening episode that teaches you the core mechanics. You spawn near your wooden cabin and must chop trees to fill your wood quota. But the forest is dangerous — predators roam freely, and the terrain holds hidden hazards.

Objective

Collect the required amount of wood and bring it back to your cabin. Each wood delivery progresses the story. You must complete the forest chapter to advance to the road.

Walkthrough

  1. Start by chopping nearby trees — stand next to a tree and press Space. Each swing collects wood. Your inventory fills automatically.
  2. Return to the cabin when your wood meter is full — approach the cabin door and it will unload automatically.
  3. Watch your HP bar — animals will attack when you get close. Back away to disengage.
  4. Use the minimap (top-right on desktop, bottom-center on mobile) to navigate the large forest and find your cabin.
  5. Kill enemies to gain EXP — leveling up restores HP and increases your stats.
  6. Collect EXP orbs that drop from enemies to level up faster.
  7. Unlock new weapons as you level up — the shotgun and minigun are devastating in the late forest stage.

Terrain Hazards

Tip: Use the super-strike (unlocked at higher levels) when surrounded by multiple enemies. It clears a ring of damage around you and can save your life in emergencies.

Forest Strategy

Warning: Do not stand in lava while fighting. The damage-per-second from lava stacks with enemy attacks and will kill you very quickly even at high levels.

🚗 Episode 2: The Road

Driving / Chase Difficulty: Hard

After the forest, you hit the mountain road in your truck. This episode is a pure driving challenge — no combat, pure reflexes. One collision ends your run immediately, so every mistake is fatal.

Objective

Drive your truck from the forest to the mountains without crashing. The road gets progressively faster and more complex as you go deeper.

Walkthrough

  1. Start slow — the first section of the road is forgiving. Use it to learn the lane patterns.
  2. Steer with A/D or left/right arrows — your truck changes lanes. On mobile, use the left joystick horizontally.
  3. Watch the road ahead — obstacles appear from the top of the screen. Look ahead, not at your truck.
  4. Dodge oncoming vehicles — they appear at random lanes. Pick the gap, not the direction.
  5. Navigate sharp turns — the road curves. Follow the road edges to stay safe.
  6. Natural obstacles — fallen trees, rocks, and debris block lanes. React early.

Road Strategy

Tip: Your score in The Road is based on distance traveled. Even if you fail, you earn a Road score for the leaderboard. Aim to beat your own best distance.

🏔 Episode 3: The Mountains

3D First-Person Shooter Difficulty: Hard

The Mountains episode is the most technically impressive — a full 3D first-person experience built in Three.js. You ride a snowmobile across snowy mountain peaks while enemies attack from the treeline. At the top, the cave entrance awaits.

Objective

Ride the snowmobile up the mountain trail, defeat all enemies that attack you, and reach the cave entrance at the summit.

Walkthrough

  1. Click the canvas to capture the mouse pointer — this locks your cursor for proper FPS aiming.
  2. Ride the snowmobile with WASD — W accelerates, S brakes/reverses, A/D steer.
  3. Aim and shoot with the mouse — move the mouse to look around and aim. Left-click to fire.
  4. Press R to reload — the Winchester 1887 shotgun holds limited shells. Reload between encounters.
  5. Follow the mountain path — the snow trail guides you upward. Deviating from the path can get you stuck.
  6. Wolves attack in packs — use spread-shot at close range for maximum damage.
  7. Bears charge slowly but hit hard — back up while shooting to maintain distance.
  8. Reach the cave entrance — at the top of the mountain, a cave opening triggers the transition to Episode 4.

Mountain Strategy

Tip: The Winchester 1887 is a pump-action shotgun — it fires multiple pellets in a spread pattern. At close range, all pellets connect for massive burst damage. Fight wolves at close quarters for maximum efficiency.

❄ Episode 4: The Ice Cave

Labyrinth / Boss Fight Difficulty: Very Hard

The final episode — a procedurally generated ice labyrinth with 7 to 14 rooms. Every playthrough generates a unique maze layout, so no two runs are the same. At the end, your wife awaits in a frozen prison cell. Break the bars with the golden hammer to finish the game.

Objective

Navigate through the ice cave rooms, defeat the guardians in each chamber, and find the final ice room where your wife is imprisoned. Use the golden hammer to destroy the cage bars and rescue her.

Walkthrough

  1. Enter the cave — you spawn in a rocky entrance chamber with your weapons from Episode 1.
  2. Follow the compass arrow — the bottom-center of the screen shows an arrow pointing toward the exit of the current room. Follow it to progress.
  3. Clear each room — most rooms have enemies that block your path. Kill them all to unlock the next door.
  4. Find the golden hammer — it appears in one of the mid-cave rooms on a glowing pedestal. Pick it up — you'll need it.
  5. Continue deeper — the rooms get harder as you go further. Mammoths appear in later chambers.
  6. Reach the final ice room — the last chamber has your wife behind ice bars. Use the golden hammer to break them.
  7. Select the golden hammer (press 7 or cycle to it) and swing it at the bars.
  8. The bars break — your wife is freed and the game ends with the victory cutscene.

Cave Navigation Tips

Golden Hammer: You have 2 charges for the golden hammer. Each swing that successfully breaks cave walls consumes one charge. The bars in the final room count as a single "wall" — one swing frees your wife. Don't waste hammer charges on regular walls unless necessary.
Warning: The golden hammer is only pickable once. If you die in the cave after collecting it, you restart the cave but the hammer is already yours. If you start the cave fresh, you must find and pick it up again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Lumberjack require any download or installation?

No. Lumberjack runs entirely in your browser. Open the page and press Play — no plugins, no app stores, no downloads required. It works on any modern browser including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

Is Lumberjack free to play?

Yes, completely free. The game is supported by non-intrusive Google AdSense advertisements displayed below the game canvas. You can decline personalized ads in the cookie consent prompt if you prefer.

Can I play Lumberjack on my phone or tablet?

Yes! Lumberjack fully supports mobile and tablet devices. The game automatically detects touch input and shows virtual joysticks — one for movement on the left, one for aiming on the right. An attack button and weapon-cycle buttons also appear on mobile.

Does my progress save automatically?

Yes. Your game progress — including completed episodes, current level, weapons, and scores — is saved in your browser's local storage and cookies. Progress persists between sessions as long as you don't clear browser data.

The Mountains episode seems very hard. Any tips?

Make sure you arrive at Episode 3 with the shotgun unlocked (level 5+) and ideally the minigun (level 6). The Winchester 1887 is most effective at close range — let enemies approach before firing. Reload during any lull in combat. The snowmobile movement takes getting used to — the WASD controls in 3D feel different from the 2D episodes.

How do I unlock all episodes?

Episodes unlock sequentially. You must complete Episode 1 (The Forest) to unlock Episode 2 (The Road). Completing The Road unlocks Episode 3 (The Mountains), and completing The Mountains unlocks Episode 4 (The Ice Cave). Once unlocked, you can start any episode directly from the main menu.

What is the golden hammer for?

The golden hammer is found in the Ice Cave episode. It is the only weapon that can destroy the cage bars imprisoning your wife. You have 2 wall-break charges. Pick it up when you find it, switch to it (press 7), and use it on the bars in the final chamber to complete the game.

Why does the ice cave layout change every time?

The cave is procedurally generated using a recursive backtracker maze algorithm. Each time you start Episode 4, a brand new unique labyrinth is created. This means every playthrough is different and you can't memorize a fixed route — you must follow the compass arrow and explore.

Can I use the keyboard to switch episodes on the main menu?

Yes. Use the arrow keys to highlight an episode card, then press Enter or Space to launch the selected episode. The highlighted episode is shown with a gold border.

Is there a leaderboard?

Yes. Your scores from each episode are recorded on a local leaderboard stored in your browser. Enter your name before playing to appear on the board. The leaderboard tracks your best scores across all episodes.
